What Is a Jewelry Engraving Block Set?
Technique
How Jewelers Use a 5 Inch Engraving Block at the Bench
Setting it up takes a couple of minutes. The habits that make cuts come out clean take a bit longer, so here are both.
1
Set up on something solid
Fit the rubber base and put the block on a firm bench. The base stops it sliding when you push a graver, and a steady block means steadier lines. Bring the work up toward your eyes instead of hunching over it, so your elbows can stay close to your body.
2
Choose the right holder
Rubber-covered pins protect finished surfaces. Concave and tapered pins suit rounded shapes, and triangular pins grip pieces with odd outlines. The locket, watch and button holders are made for those pieces, and bent pins help when something is awkward to reach.
3
Clamp it and test it
Tighten with the key until the piece feels firm, then give it a gentle wiggle. If it moves, adjust the pins. Firm is enough. A thin ring shank can flex or dent if you crush it, and that’s a mistake you only make once.
4
Set the brake
Adjust the internal brake so the block holds against your graver pressure but still turns when you push on purpose. Too loose, and the work drifts mid-cut. Too tight, and every repositioning turns into a fight.
5
Tilt, rotate and mark
Release the brake, turn the piece to the angle you want, and lock it again. If you need to flip a piece to work the other side, pencil a small mark on the shank first so you don’t engrave a pattern upside down.
6
Engrave or set, then clean up
Keep your graver sharp, because dull tools need force and force is what shifts a piece in the jaws. For stone setting, tilt the work so the seat faces you and you can see the girdle clearly. Afterwards, brush the filings out of the rotating parts and add a drop of light oil now and then.
