Anneal Your Metal
Heat the metal piece gently until it glows a dull red, then let it air-cool (or quench in water for copper and silver). This relieves work-hardening and makes the metal pliable enough to form cleanly without cracking at the edges.

Select Your Starting Cavity
For a finished dome in the 10mm cavity, start in the 14mm or 16mm. Working down in stages produces a smoother, more even dome than forcing the metal into its final shape in one shot.

Position the Punch & Strike
The punch should sit centered in the cavity. Use a chasing hammer or ball-peen for control — not a heavy engineer's hammer. Strike with even, deliberate blows, rotating the work slightly between strikes for an even dome.

Move Down Through Cavity Sizes
Once the metal has taken the larger dome shape, move it to the next smaller cavity and repeat. Anneal again if the metal starts to feel stiff or shows any sign of cracking at the edge.

Finish & Trim
Once you've reached the finished dome size, trim the edge with a jeweler's saw or snips if needed, then refine the edge with a file and finish to your desired polish level.
